Health Care Management in India

The health care system in India signifies that even though India is turning 75, the average Indian Hospital continues to be more or less primitive and underdeveloped.

Hospital management as an independent specialty is yet to be recognized by our policymakers. Hospital management education is the weakest link in our educational system, giving rise to an unending array of problems in the day-to-day working of hospitals.

Healthcare is one of the world’s largest industries and it is imperative that India should be prepared to meet the health care challenges of this new millennium. The growing demand for quality health care and the absence of a matching delivery system poses a challenge and certainly a great opportunity. As well in the last three decades, the health care system has had to face the challenges of technological developments leading to assist diagnosis in a more sophistical way and on the other hand increasing expectations and awareness regarding their situation made the task of hospital administration more challenging, the enormous and continual rise in the cost of health care makes their job further demanding. Hence, the freshly graduated health personnel have to constantly improve their knowledge, skill, and competence as well as learn to keep pace with these changes.

To achieve this goal, the hospital administration/managers shall always keep the following points in their mind:

  1. Patients’ satisfaction level.
  2. Methods for improving the quality of patient’s care.
  3. Reduce the congestion and waiting time of outpatients.
  4. Contain the costs and always organize additional resources.
  5. Technological update.

As per the records of the Indian Society of Health Administration, the following are the problems that are needs to be addressed:

  1. By large in Indian Hospitals most administrator in the hospital are physicians, surgeons or belongs to any other discipline of medicine but they had no formal training in management science and practices.
  2. Lack of funds for hospital services and staff trainings.

  4. Absence for policies for the safety and motivating employees that affects their output and services performed.
